Although, many people don’t know the history behind the Jaguar symbol. For instance, there are actually two Jaguar emblems. Learn all about the Jaguar car logo, its meaning, and more with Jaguar Manhattan.

What is the Meaning of the Jaguar Logos?

The Jaguar symbol was designed to represent “grace, elegance, performance, power, and the ambition to leap forward.” Read on to find out more details about the Jaguar car logo:

  • The Leaping Jaguar emblem is a sleek silver, snarling jaguar cat in mid-leap. This symbol was originally introduced as a hood ornament, but it’s now a two-dimensional badge in silver, metallic gray, and black.
  • The Roaring Jaguar is a circular emblem with a front-facing silver jaguar cat roaring–Englewood drivers will typically see it with a red background and silver border. Although, earlier renditions include a gold Jaguar with a black border and red background.

The silver and metallic gray Jaguar colors symbolize modernity and sophistication, black exemplifies integrity and performance, and red is for the passion for the drive.

The Origins of the Jaguar Emblem

Founded on September 4, 1992, Jaguar began as a British automotive company that was known as the Swallow Sidecar Company. They manufactured sidecars for motorcycles in England, and the company was renamed and rebranded as an automotive manufacturer – SS Cars Limited in 1934. Read on to find out more about the Jaguar symbol’s background:

  • 1935 – The SS Jaguar was produced as the first model featuring the name Jaguar. The Jaguar symbol featured on the models was a badge with the text “Jaguar” surrounded by the wings and tail of a bird.
  • 1945 – The SS Cars Limited brand was renamed as Jaguar Cars Limited to establish themselves as a British brand while avoiding any confusion with the Nazi SS military group operating during World War II.
  • 1945 – The famous Leaping Jaguar logo was first introduced on hood ornaments. The brand kept the style unchanged until the early 2000s.

The Evolution of the Jaguar Hood Ornament:

There are several reasons why Jaguar models, and many other vehicles around the world, had their hood ornaments removed:

  • 1968 – The federal seat belt law passed, resulting in major vehicle-design changes. Meaning, decorative pieces like fins and hood ornaments were set on the backburner as aerodynamics and passenger/pedestrian safety were prioritized.
  • The 1980s – There was a spike of hood ornament theft as it became a fashion trend to wear them on necklaces. Because these pieces were costly to replace, fewer and fewer cars were being manufactured with them.
  • 2005 – The European Union initiated safety regulations for pedestrian safety, which required hood ornaments to collapse, bend, or fold away in the event of a frontal collision. Many luxury brands like Jaguar removed the hood ornaments to make the production run smoothly.

You can still flaunt the Leaping Jaguar as your drive through The Bronx on newer models which have a silhouetted badge-style version on the driver’s side and rear of the vehicle. You can also find a circular Roaring Jaguar emblem front and center on the grille.
